Although the US passes 600,000 Covid-19 deaths, California and New York lifted their remaining restrictions. South Africa has reimplemented tighter restrictions, including an extension of nightly curfew and stricter limits on gatherings, as Covid-related hospital admissions increased. Mexico aims to gradually lift pandemic-related restrictions along its shared border with the United States as it progresses in vaccinating the local population against COVID-19.

  • June 16: 374,488 7-day average new cases, compared to 392,583 a week ago and 664,702 a month ago. Now confirmed 176,929,923 cases worldwide vs 174,312,782 cases last week.
  • 3,833,013 people have died (2.2% of confirmed cases) and 160,566,773 have recovered (90.8%).
  • Europe: 49,228,352 cases; 7-day avg growth of 34,368 vs 41,119 a week ago and 85,869 a month ago.
  • USA: 33,498,468 cases; 7-day avg growth of 12,674 vs 14,627 a week ago and 32,037 a month ago. 
  • Vaccines: around 2.45 billion doses have been administered globally, of which 312 million in the USA and 304 million in the EU. 102 vaccines are in clinical evaluation and 185 vaccines are in preclinical evaluation.
